Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque 2016 is a vintage Champagne built on finesse rather than force, with the floral, Chardonnay-led delicacy the house is known for. It arrives in the famous anemone-painted bottle, but the wine inside is the point: bright, chalky and very fine-boned.
The aromas lean white-flowered and citrusy — lemon blossom, white peach, a little honeysuckle — with brioche and toasted almond sitting underneath rather than over the top. Air brings out something gently nutty and a whiff of sea spray.
On the palate the mousse is soft and persistent, carrying grapefruit, nashi pear and lemon curd across a taut, mineral line. The dosage is handled with restraint, so the finish reads dry and chalky, lingering on citrus pith and a faint smoky note rather than sweetness. It has real tension for a Champagne this perfumed.
Serve it with oysters, raw kingfish or scallops, or pour it alongside roast chicken and buttery potatoes if you want to see the richer side. Hard cheeses and almonds work well late in the evening.
Drinking beautifully now, and the acidity and structure suggest Perrier-Jouët Belle Epoque 2016 will reward cellaring through to around 2032. Open it a little warmer than fridge-cold, in a white wine glass, to get the full aromatic range.
