Woodcutter's Shiraz / 2024 / 750mL

Tasting Note

Torbreck Woodcutter's Shiraz 2024 is a generous, fruit-forward Barossa Valley Shiraz built for drinking rather than cellaring heroics. Sourced from the estate's younger Barossa vineyards, it delivers the region's trademark depth in a style you can open on a Tuesday.

The nose is dark and welcoming — blackberry, satsuma plum and a lick of blueberry, with black pepper, dried thyme and a faint smoky earthiness sitting behind the fruit. A mild to warm summer in 2024 drove even ripening across the Barossa, and it shows in the bright colour and clear-cut fragrance of the Shiraz here, with the fruit powerful but not stewed.

Across the palate the wine is broad and sweetly fruited, with real weight through the middle and a soft, almost velvety texture. Twelve months in seasoned French oak barriques and foudres has shaped it without stamping it, leaving fine, savoury tannins to draw the finish back into line. It closes long, warm and clean, with just enough freshness to keep you reaching for the glass.

Serve it with lamb shoulder cooked slowly with garlic and rosemary, a rare porterhouse off the barbecue, kangaroo fillet with beetroot, or a wedge of aged cheddar. Nothing fussy is required — this is a wine that meets robust cooking head on.

Drink now through to about 2032, with a decant of half an hour helping the younger bottles unwind.
