The Kooyong Faultline Chardonnay 2024 is a taut, savoury single-block Chardonnay from the Mornington Peninsula, built more on line and mineral drive than on ripe fruit weight. Grown at Tuerong on the Kooyong vineyard, it sits at the serious end of Peninsula Chardonnay without ever feeling heavy.
Grapefruit pith, white nectarine and lemon zest lead the aromatics, with a chalky, oyster-shell edge underneath and a light struck-flint character that lifts as the wine opens. Time in the glass brings out white flowers and a curl of toasted almond.
The palate is lean in the best sense, narrow and long rather than broad, with citrus and green apple carried on firm acidity. Texture comes from a fine, slightly saline grip through the middle, and the finish is dry and drawn out, closing on lemon rind and a stony minerality that lingers well after the fruit has faded.
Pour it with Cape Grim scallops, a whole roasted flathead with lemon, chicken poached in white wine, or a plate of freshly shucked Pacific oysters. It also stands up nicely to soft washed-rind cheeses.
Drinking well from 2026 through to around 2033, the Kooyong Faultline Chardonnay 2024 will reward a few years in the cellar, where the acid line softens and the flinty, nutty complexity comes forward.
Serve it at around 12°C rather than fridge-cold.
